### Welcome to Secret Breakfast / The best place to start thinking that fridges are spaceships, and cheese is where land, animals and culture meet

Hi there!

At first, this issue is a random mess, as usual.

But it’s also a reflection on the senses. That may sound extreme, but pleasure, discomfort, and even lunch boxes are all about the senses.

Hope you enjoy it!

*Piero*

✹**Anne Carson**, the freshest [Nobel Prize in Literature](https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2026/press-release/?ref=secretbreakfast.com), cut and pasted from [*The Glass Essay*](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/48636/the-glass-essay?ref=secretbreakfast.com). I suggest you take your time to read that with no interruptions (somehow dificult if you're reading this on the smartphone, but you get me).

## Where the feed ends and the baking begins

![](https://secretbreakfast.com/content/images/2026/10/cedric.png)

**Photography by* [**Nacho Alegre for WSJ Magazine*](https://www.wsj.com/style/cedric-grolet-pastry-opera-1842f553?ref=secretbreakfast.com)

Sunday night. A French pastry chef folds dough in slow motion. Forty seconds. Your shoulders drop. You feel almost fed. You save the video and keep scrolling.

You will never bake that pie. And nothing felt missing.

That is the point of *\[this newsletter! and\]* [a new book by Patricia Nilsson](https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/462785/guilty-pleasure-by-nilsson-patricia/9780241711293?ref=secretbreakfast.com). The Financial Times journalist spent five years investigating porn like an oil market. [Her Guardian interview](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/sep/29/patricia-nilsson-exposing-worlds-biggest-porn-bosses?ref=secretbreakfast.com) explains why the internet we all use runs on its logic.

The book is *Guilty Pleasure: The Pornification of the Internet, the Economy, and Everything Else*. **Nilsson argues that online adult content is not a dark corner of the web. It is the blueprint.** Streaming, personal branding and attention capture were all tested there first. She calls the result the “masturbatory” part of the internet: a feed built to arouse us, flatter us and make us linger.

The book closes on AI. Chatbots are becoming friends, therapists and lovers. They are endlessly affirming and ask nothing back. It is the same logic, taken to the extreme. **Nilsson says it is getting harder to tell whether we are “using the system or becoming what it needs us to be”.**

Now bring that into the kitchen.

Food content runs on the same loop. The 30-second recipe. The ASMR dough. The cheese pull in slow motion. The pleasure arrives first. The effort never does.

So, some questions: **do we watch cooking instead of cooking? Is a recipe still an instruction, or has it become a show? We joked about “food porn” for years, was it a joke or a diagnosis?**

A small test. Open your saved recipes. Count the last ten. How many did you actually cook? Maybe it's just time to pick one.

### [The man hiking the world in search of rare cheeses](https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20261007-the-man-hiking-the-world-in-search-of-rare-cheeses?ref=secretbreakfast.com)

**Madison Chapman / BBC Travel**

In Georgia, shepherds age a feta-like cheese in inside-out sheepskins, and in Turkey one cheese ripens in furry goatskins until it looks like an animal. Trevor Warmedahl hunts these survivors across the world, after quitting a Seattle cheesemaking job when he realised he never saw the animals behind his milk. Since then he has lived in a Mongolian yurt, milked yaks and walked 130 km down a Georgian valley with shepherds and 300 sheep. His thesis: cheese is where land, animals and culture meet, so try the strange ones ten times, and don’t ask farmers to act like a museum.

### [Abolish the Meal!](https://www.vittlesmagazine.com/p/abolish-the-meal?ref=secretbreakfast.com)

**Juliet Jacques / Vittles**

"It’s not that I don’t like food. It’s that I resent having to decide what to eat three times a day, and that I absolutely hate cooking". So, what does Juliet do? She swaps lunch for meal replacements: Huel, a Müller shake and a BOL shake. (Something I tried to do a couple of times in my life, with no success). Every time, she ends up wolfing down a pizza or a pub meal a few hours later (exactly!). Her verdict: only the Müller deserves a second chance, and making a sandwich is not much harder.
